FAQs

How long do the classes/treatment last?

Depending on multiple factors (such as your blood alcohol level at the time of the DUI and if you’ve had multiple DUI offenses) you will be assigned to complete a certain number of DUI group hours.  This could range from a 12 hour class completed on the weekend to up to a year of group treatment.  Your counselor will talk with you about this during your registration appointment.

Can I get through the classes sooner?

You will not be able to take more than one class a week.

What if I need to miss a class?

Because attending the class is a part of your probation requirements, class attendance is mandatory.  We understand an emergency may arise which would keep you from attending a class.  You are required to call and inform us of your absence as soon as possible.

Missed classes can be made up.  Unexcused absence(s) may affect your eligibility and result in discharge.  Discharge will have an effect on your probation.

How much does it cost?

Acclaim Counseling uses a sliding scale fee (per class) based on your income. For current fees, please contact us at 303.451.2321 or e-mail acclaimcounseling@gmail.com. Phone lines are open Tuesday – Friday, 10 am to 5 pm or Saturday, 9 am to noon.  Class fees are collected before each class. Someone will talk with you about this during your intake (registration) appointment.

What are the classes like?

Depending on how many hours of DUI services you are assigned, you will participate in educational classes or treatment groups.  There are generally 10-12 people in a class/group.

If I was sent to Acclaim Counseling by someone else how will they (probation, social services, etc.) know that I completed the classes?

Your counselor will ask you to sign a consent to release information, giving us your permission to talk to whomever referred you. With your permission, Acclaim will send them notice when you have completed the classes.

Will I have to do urine tests or breathalyzer tests?

This will depend on what is required as a condition of your probation.

What is Level I Alcohol Education?

Level I Education consists of 12 hours of DUI education over a minimum 2-day period, not more than 6 hours can be conducted in one calendar day.  Typically conducted in a group or class.  Level I Education is not appropriate for someone who has had more than one impaired driving offense, or one offense with a high BAC.

What is Level II Alcohol Education?

Level II Education consists of 24 hours of DUI education over 12 weeks. Typically conducted in a group setting, class size is limited to not more than 12 regularly attending. Level II Education can be recommended by itself or may be followed by Level II Therapy.

What is Level II Alcohol Therapy?

When Level II Therapy is required it follows Level II Education and can range in length from 5 to 10 months depending on the track assigned. Track assignment depends on whether a person has prior impaired driving offenses, their BAC and other clinical indicators. These track recommendations are made by the alcohol evaluator (probation) or in the absence of an evaluation, the treatment agency.

The following are the track guidelines:

Track A, 42 hours over 21 weeks, first time offender with a BAC below .17 (.2 if offense was prior to 1/1/07)

Track B, 52 hours over 26 weeks, first time offender with a BAC of .17 or above (.2 if offense was prior to 1/1/07)

Track C, 68 hours over 34 weeks, prior DWAI/DUI, with a BAC below .17 (.2 if offense was prior to 1/1/07)

Track D, 86 hours over 43 weeks, prior DWAI/DUI, with a BAC of .17 or above (.2 if offense was prior to 1/1/07)
